Masonic Angel Fund

As part of our effort to reach out to the community, Broad Ripple Lodge #643 F&AM created its Masonic Angel Fund on April 12, 2001. The Fund delivers modest assistance to children in need who do not fit the criteria for the usual social service programs, and is designed to provide money for small but important expenditures that can make a difference in a child’s life. Money for glasses, books, a winter coat, new shoes, summer camp fees and other such items are not extravagant, but are nevertheless out of the reach of struggling families. We will be in partnership with School 84, Joseph Bingham Elementary, the elementary school serving the Broad Ripple neighborhood, and with the Indiana School for the Blind.

It is our intention not to have direct contact with the child or family. The principal, school nurses and guidance counselors of the schools will be the eyes and ears of the Fund, and they will determine which children are in need and what those needs may be. The Lodge will make the commitment to get a check into the hands of the principal within days of their request, proving that Masons can be counted upon to act quickly. In cases where professional services are needed (i.e. medical, dental, optical, etc.) we will work with the school to make available Masonry’s numerous resources of this nature.

Not only is the Masonic Angel Fund an excellent program for the community – it is also a positive force to create enthusiasm within our fraternity by providing opportunities to do generous things for children. The Angel Fund is a successful vehicle for presenting Freemasonry to the community as a socially relevant, beneficial body of normal, everyday people and for helping to dispel our aura of mystery.

The Fund has been initially seeded with money from the Lodge, but the desire is for the Fund to sustain itself through contributions from our members and the community. It operates under a separate account, and the Lodge will pay for all administration – all money donated to the Masonic Angel Fund will go directly to help the children.
The first Masonic Angel Fund was started by a group of Lodges in Massachusetts, and the program there has become so successful that it has spread across their state. Broad Ripple’s is the first to be started outside of Massachusetts, and we have already heard from other area Lodges interested in the program. For large donations, the Masonic Angel Foundation in Massachusetts is a 501(c)(3) organization, and will accept donations on our behalf, grant a tax deduction to the donor, and distribute the money back to us at no charge.
