I was contacted last Wednesday by the social worker at the Indiana School for the Blind, about a 13 year old blind boy with other disabilities who lives on the campus several days a week. His mother is a single mom struggling to raise three kids. The social worker contacted our Angel Fund because the boy was coming to school with ragged shoes and few clothes — what he had was clean, but threadbare and very limited. She went shopping at Wal-Mart with my authorization and purchased him shoes, a coat, three pairs of pants, tee shirts, long johns and underwear for $125.
This is exactly the sort of situation the Broad Ripple Masonic Angel Fund was created for. Other organizations require bureaucratic paperwork and days or weeks of authorization to get help for a child like this. I was able to get a check within 12 hours of her shopping trip, and less than 24 hours after her first phone call. More important, this relatively small amount of money has made an enormous change in this young man’s daily life. We are designed to keep our assistance in the $250 or less range, not for catastrophic costs, but to buy coats, glasses, books, clothes, shoes, fees — the kinds of things that most other assistance programs won’t bother with.

Families and friends joined the brethren at 3:00 PM on Saturday, January 7th to witness the installation of the 2012 officers of Broad Ripple Lodge. WBro. Michael Walkup, PM served as the Installing Master and was assisted by: Installing Marshall WBro. Todd Ebbert, PM; Installing Chaplain, WBro. Don Seeley; and Installing Secretary, Bro. Robert Mountain.

WBro. Michael Walkup, PM addressed all of those in attendance with warm opening remarks and quickly began the installation with assistance from the WBro. Todd Ebbert, PM. After the installation ceremony, WBro. Michael Dewitt gave a heartfelt welcome to those in the room and asked all of the new officers to stand and introduce themselves. After the officer introductions, the new Worshipful Master introduced WBro. James Lindsey as the Education officer and WBro. Will Sailor as Mentor.

Once the remarks were finished WBro. Michael Dewitt, PM presented Bro. Rob Mountain with a Pen in recognition of his accepting the position of Assistant Secretary of the lodge. Bro. Ben Fuhr received the Roy A. Bates Memorial Award from WBro. Michael Walkup, PM for his devotion and hard work in 2011.

The brethren, families, and friends took refreshment afterwards at the Monon Food Company in Broad Ripple. An excellent meal was enjoyed and even better company was had.

The ceremony will take place at the Masonic statue of George Washington that is located on the South lawn of the Indiana State Capital Building on Thursday August 4, 2011 at 11 AM. We will assemble at 10 AM  in the parking lot of the Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish-Rite located at 650 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204. We will step off at 11 AM sharp in processional to the Statehouse South lawn.

On Thursday night, the brothers of Broad Ripple Lodge and their friends and family are heading out for a night at Victory Field. We’ll be cheering on the Indianapolis Indians baseball team as they take on the Norfolk Tides. Our cheering section will be on the lawn and tickets are only $9. Picnic dinners and blankets are strongly encouraged!

Hope to see you all there! Game time is 7:05; so start looking for us on the lawn around 6:30pm. For more details or to find us on game day, contact Mike Dewitt, Family Committee.

No RSVPs are necessary for this event.

If it looks like rain will cancel the game, or make it a miserable evening, then the backup plan is to just find another game on another night. Available officers will meet at the lodge for an impromptu practice.
